Hello dear ones,
Happy Easter weekend! I had an image in my head this week based on these words of Jesus:
“This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 6:28
Yesterday, I saved the screen recording of my attempt to sketch out that image on my iPad:
I was also studying Luke 4:14-28 for Bible study this week. In this passage, Jesus preaches on selections from Isaiah in the synagogue in his hometown:
"‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.’"
And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’" (Luke 4:18-20)
Jesus chose to stand and read two passages from the Isaiah scroll, but not the parts about God's vengeance against his enemies. He read about freedom and liberty and the year of the Lord's favor--for all people. That's what he came for and that's what he accomplished!
"They shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it." Psalm 22:31
"After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), "I thirst." A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished," and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." John 19:28-30
I hope the glorious good news about the work Jesus accomplished for us fills you with joy and hope today!
Here is a prayer for us this Easter:
"May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance." (2 Thes. 3:5)
